As per the theory of KARMA, (the birth and death cycle)
it is the net outcome of what ever good acts we have done in our previous birth as birth as a human being is considered a big boon as we can by our acts in this life attain the position of salvation, a stage of no more births and deaths.
We are here because we were born to our parents and the thought of bringing us up here in this place only and we have no other place to go for the present
We are here because we chose to come here for higher studies, in search of employment, because of our own actions, of our own free will or against it ..., whatever it may be.
We are here so that we can be of help to one another and we can achieve something collectively.
We are here stranded because we could not go there.
Of the above which ever suits as best you can select.

Why, that three letter word seems to pop up more than any other. There is no real answer to that in the sense you ask it. Your purpose on this planer is not clearly defined. Humans cause more harm than good to the earth.
