As soon as possible like about a year old.

My son also started swimming at 5 months and has just turned 1. He loves the water and crawls straight into the surf when we are at the beach. I think it is a good idea to start children as soon as possible especially if they are going to be around water a lot as it gives them a sense of water awareness even before they can actually swim.

I think I started at about 7 months because we lived by the beach and my mum loved swimming.

About as soon as a child starts to crawl is about the earliest 'good time' to start... It's good to have their legs and arms strong enough carry themselves since you 'carry' yourself through water when swimming. Even though they really won't be able to swim without assistance until they are around 2 - 2.5years.
I personally started at a little over a year. Got thrown into a pool, and learned on my own, but wouldn't suggest it for ANYONE else.

I started my daughter swimming before she walked just let her get over fear of the water, by letting go of her and staying by her , just for a few sec then grab her and talk soothing to her like you would if she rode a bike good. Plus you can tell if a baby or young child (2 to 3 years old to start), are natural swimmers by there actions in the water.

I have always started my kids early, it gets them used to the water without fear.
My first started swimming with us around 6 months of course in a swim float never alone as they get older around 2 they can actually swim with assistance, by three they can do it own their own

My sister and I started taking swimming lessons early, we were doing laps in an olympic size pool at 4-6 years old.

My son is 11 months old and was in the pool today! He loves the water and if it is cool and refreshing for us on a hot day then it is probably the same for them. He was born July 1st so last summer was just a bit too early but he has been in the water for the last month or so.

The classes that my daughter and I took started children at 6 months old. She's 5 1/2 now and still takes classes, she loves swimming.

I think the earlier the better! Get them used to the water, and teach them proper water safety rules. Being fearless is as bad as being fearful!

I would get them in the water at about 6 months, but no lessons until 4 years.
