There used to be machine called a typewriter. It was a machine before computers (shocking I know) when you hit the return key it would return to the next line. If you "returned" twice it would be double spaced. The principle holds true for computers. Most word processing programs like MS Word have a setting for that.
it looks like this.
Ahh fun with technology!!!

There are two spaces between lines. To do this in Word, before you start typing your document, go to Format>Paragraph, and select double space.

As the other people mentioned, its an extra space in between each line in text. In a basic software such as Notepad, you just have to press enter after each line to put a line in between. With Microsoft Word, you can go to Page Setup under the File menu and set your page to automatically type in double space.

It means that there is an empty line between every typed line, Microsoft Word has an option so it will automatically do it.
