You have a large selection of really bad answers here. Everyone that centers on the clothing, the make-up etc, needs to pull their heads out of their asses and learn that the person you are isn't defined by what you wear. And carlito, needs help, real help. As for your answer, do some research, it is a subculture of the punk-rock movement, but again, a lot of bad information. Hit the library, not the web. When you search the web you don't know where your information is coming from, when you are in the library every source is verifiable.

Goth is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries around the globe. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture is remarkable for its longevity compared with others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities show influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly by way of horror movies.

The goth subculture has associated "gothic" tastes in music and fashion. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a “dark” sound. Styles of dress within the subculture range from death rock, punk, Victorian, androgynous, some Renaissance style clothes, combinations of the above, and/or lots of black attire, makeup and hair.

Usually an overweight teenage girl, who for some reason or another, says she can't "fit in." If the girl was smaller, she would try to be "emo" but due to her love for food, or bad genetics, she can't fit into those small pants and youth-small shirts, so she's stuck with the huge black pants from Hot Topic, with 46 straps on the back. Add on some crappy make up, and put her in a class like JROTC (because it's "different"). She's almost a token goth now. But you can't have a goth girl, without making her "bisexual." Now she may not REALLY be, but she's so physically unattractive, that all of the guys she wants aren't interested in her. So she fantasizes about them, while looking at her HIM poster, until she comes up with the idea that she's "bi". While she probably isn't, all of the other nympho goth girls say they are too, so they have a ball with that and eventually give each other herpies, while listening to some pretty horrible music.

A person who wears black clothes, paints their nails, has a excessive amount of piercings and tattoos, has weird hair styles and or colors. Then your more extreme will actually practice the "religion" of gothicism or will worship Satan.

I dont like the black dressess of gothic persons, but they are far far more intelligent than those mormons, jehova witness, christians, muslims and all the others thinking that fairy tales of religions are true.

It's basically a subculture. Some people are just into a 'darker' side. Just like some boneheads are into rap....or an 'urban' subculture.
Ignore the other idiotic answers.

From what I have seen, most are teenagers..., some are dressed up really cute too. When I was younger, it would have been called a Halloween costume, Now...I believe that it is just confused teens, trying to find their own identity, a place to fit in.

Uncivilized, but do you really think that humanity in modern times is any better than the date of the First Day? Naked you came too.
To learn a person must be taught first.
