I went for a long weekend, there is so much to do. You can go shopping on Michigan Avenue, go to Navy Pier overlooking Lake Michigan, eat at the 1st Uno's Pizzaria, go to the Art Museum. Go see the fountain that's at the beginning of Married With Children. We took one of those tour buses that goes around the city and points out everything from the ball stadiums, and history of the city, to where Oprah lives. Eat deep dish pizza every chance you get. Chicago is one of the best cities I've ever been to-very clean, friendly people, etc.

YES! You can go to Navy Pier and ride the Ferris Wheel, you can go window shopping on Michigan Ave, you can grab a bite to eat at Giordano's Pizza or any of the other famous pizza places, you can ride the speed dog and get a tour of the city, you can go for drinks on the John Hancock, go to the sky deck in the Sears Tower, take a stroll on Lake Shore Drive, there are a lot of fun things to do in Chicago! I love Chi-Town!

How short a period of time? You can take in a ball game. Rent a bike and ride along the lake, explore the museums, ride the el and peoplewatch, go to the top of the Hancock or Sears tower, rent a Segway and ride around downtown, take an architechtural tour, take a boat ride in the lake or the river...
so to answer your question, yeah..

Plenty of things.
Window shop on Michigan Avenue.
Visit the Art Institute.
Get a deep dish pizza.
Take an architectural tour.
You didn't specify exactly how short, but any of these could be done in around an hour.
