You don't have to use the voice option. If you are not satisfied with this additional options, there is another choice. You could download msn messenger it is usually used without voice, but I think it has the voice option too.

Use Trillian it is a free messenger which works with Yahoo, AIM, MSN, ICQ, IRC. No need to worry about the phone thing. You can get it at http://www.download.com/3000-2150-10047473.html

the voice is just an option on the latest version...it's kind of a package deal..you don't have to use it though. i have messenger and i never use the voice part.
