Taking pain pills is okay when you need to, but I suggest to try Anti-Flammatory pills instead because some pain pills given for moderate to severe pain can lead to addiction.
Unfortunately, lumbar back pain is horrible from onset. The effects can leave a man or woman in depression and cause other health problems...lumbar back is nothing to play with. There are cat scans, MRI, Mylo grams and much more to detect exactly what is causing the pain, but deterioration with disc disease amongst many of the factors including Scoliosis can lead to Spinal Steno-sis and then your in deep trouble. Treat that back like a baby because once it is injured the percentage rate of recovery fully is almost obsolete. God Bless with all God Speed and good luck... signed......Disabled American Veteran

Have him try a clinical massage therapist. Check your phone book for reputable therapists in your area. The cold hands and feet sound like nerve damage and the loss of sensation does not sound good. Did the doctors send him for a CAT scan and/or an MRI? You might want to seek a second opinion with a neurologist. Good luck and best wishes.

I have lower back pain from several herniated disks; my doctor suggests using a "moist" heating pad, which I think really helps relieve pain because it provides deep heat to the area. Also anti-inflammatory medicines and most importantly, not doing things that aggravate the condition; a lot of common sense. Good luck!
