I've just been voting on some unresolved questions. In every case I discovered I had been the first person to vote and it reminded me of when I was a kid and used to go to the swimming baths as early as possible to be the first one to dive in to the perfectly smooth and still water.

I make a point of reading the last answers first, cuz it seems people stop at the first answer they agree with. I used to do that and then I would find a better answer and would grind my teeth over my first selection. It takes me a while to vote and rate.

After I vote I feel like I'm on Mars, the dust is only disturbed by the dead overturned rovers with their little metal wheels in the air not even spinning. What knowledge has been skipped, run over, or never even found? I'm the only vote, where is everybody?

I love a virgin book, it has to be brand new, so no one else has touched the pages. I have to be the first to turn them over.

The same applies to newspapers and magazines. These are my favourite material items, the only things I could not live without, because they afford me so much pleasure through the knowledge I discover from within.

My parents each had their own newspapers, one leaning to the right politically, the other to the left.

I read them both before they got home, while still very young and through them, I discovered I could find good and bad inside them both, which makes me middle of the road.

I read about the coronation (and saw it on TV) in my eighth year. I also read about the execution of Ruth Ellis (and heard it on the Home Service news at the very hour) a couple of years later.

I can live without all material things except these.

So I guess I like to be the first one with the news, the fiction, and the facts.

I see what you mean.
That's a nice association you made there.

I make associations all the time, it's great. My latest is how to answer questions on Answers is much like surfing the net at random. You come across loads of data, some is interesting, some not but often it's a worthy endeavour in expanding ones mind.

I was on a cycle going to work very early one morning, the road was closed, I took no notice I thought a peddle cycle would not be affected.
I cycled straight down a 6 foot diameter man hole in the middle of the road, there was just enough room for the bike and me still sitting on it , I got the bike out, the wheels were now oval!!
I looked down at the manhole and my first thought was that I was very pleased to have been the first cyclist to have performed that fete!!

I think most people in this country are driven by competition! Look at our government. We will take any great lengths to stay on top. Athletes take drugs to enhance their abilities. As school kids we would push each other out of the way to be the head of the line. Companies are driven by competition. We as a society must be first. Who can earn the most money? Who has the best car? What do you think high school reunions are based on???? It's bragging rights; it's power; it's what makes this world turn on its axis!

I used to work as a lifeguard, I could never resist diving into the pool first thing in the morning - no people, no ripples, just mirror-like clean water! Why? Making my mark I guess and knowing it wasn't permanent or damaging.

That's a good association. Mine is more cynical!!

I don't think many people bother to read through every answer and make a measured decision. And I think a lot of people vote for themselves!!

I like the moment when you've voted and you check who else voted and who for - but it can be infuriating!

i guess no one else cares to vote on the topics that you are voting on or you are just the first to view them.
you would be surprised on the people that don't even bother with voting at all

thanks,

SS

I find it difficult to resist writing my name in in dust or on a steamy window - I think it is the association between just 'being' and leaving a mark to prove you have 'been'
