If you have never used Linux before, let me suggest running a LiveCD version first just to try it on for size without committing any hard drive space. If you're a Linux pro, then it really depends on what you are using it for. Unbuntu is best geared to GNOME interface lovers, although Kunbuntu (which I have used) is sufficient for those who love KDE. I'm a Mandriva fan myself, but that's because my biggest use for my machine is multimedia, and Mandriva rocks for that use.

I do agree about VMWare rocking, although it does have a hefty price tag and the Linux version isn't so easy to "obtain" using other methods.

I myself strongly dislike using Ubuntu. Anything remotely difficult (read: compiling network drivers) cannot be done on it. If you are new to Linux, check out SuSE.

I've been a windows user since 3.1, and i'm a net admin.

Just installed ubuntu dapper and i love it. I've installed it on a virtual machine using vmware server on both my computer at home and work and i'm using it more every day (even to answer this question).

The learning curve is great, and i'm loving the journey beyond the windows world.

Try it in VMWARE and see for yourself! (You can run it in windows :-)

that is a personal taste. Some isps will not support you if you use it. I had a disk from a friend to try it out. Asked my isp they told me i was on my own if i used it.
