Over the years I have had a lot of friends who were and are truckers. Most are hard working people who carry everything imaginable and even unimaginable along the highways. They carry hard to handle loads like swinging beef and even pipes.

There is one thing that does bother me and that is when some truckers tailgate before passing. I know you have to get a lot of weight moving in order to pass, but sometimes you get a little too close for my comfort.

Then again, I can put the show on the other food and say, "Why do truckers hate those of us that travel the highways pulling our 5th wheels and travel trailers?" I try to provide every courtesy I can when a trucker passes including flashing my headlights when your trailer is clear of me. I appreciate it when you thank me with your flashers. I still miss the good ole CB days of the 70's though. If you should come up on my old Jayco 5th wheel and my old and getting tired 88 F-250, I will do all I can to get you by me safely on our twice annual trek between Ontario Canada and south Texas.

I think we can all do better on the highways including the general traveler, we retired folks and our trailers and the truckers. Happy truckin' and keep it between the ditches and the shinny side up.

This is a complicated question to answer but the simplest answer is that the "new generation" of truckers dont know how to drive. they go to school and dont learn anything.

Im sure you can see this after 14 years on the road.

With that said, Most truckers that I come across (and i meet alot) don't know anything about the equiptment that they have to drive.

"back in the day" you didn't have the people driving that you do now. most people back then acctually knew what they were doing.

14 yrs ago there were a lot few vehicles on the road period. Now there are a lot more stupid auto drivers and because the demand for truck shipping there are a lot more truckers out there. In a city like LA there's already too much traffic and you add in a few in-experienced drivers (truck or car) and you get get bent out of shape pretty easy. Thursday there was trucker hauling a flatbed up the 405 during rush hour, weaving in and out like he was driving a sport compact. Now that's not the typical trucker but enough bad apples give the good ones a bad name. Keep it in gear and keep your chin up.

All I can think of is that noone respects anyone anymore. I always try to give truckers the respect they deserve when I drive, they can cremate me! But I see too many people passing on the right and cutting off giant 18-wheelers. Maybe they are just stupid, maybe "No Child Left Behind" has caused the elimination of good drivers ed classes. I don't know.

Because people get on the road and they (alot of them) don't pay attention or are on their cell phones. Myself if I am in the left turn lane and I see that a trucker is going to turn I will back up and give them more room. If it wasn't for truckers we wouldn't have groceries etc at our local stores, etc. My brother is a truck driver and I rode with him one time from Sunnyside, Washington clear back to Cleveland, Ohio. And I couldn't believe the nuts out there especially the little cars that like to pull out in front of a loaded truck!

It is because they are afraid of you. You also have to go deal with all of the laws and regulations that your company (if you are under a company) put on you as far as speed. Mostly people are selfish and are always in a hurry. They also don't have any respect for the vehicle you are driving. Most don't understand what it takes for you to slow down or speed up. I think it would be very scary to drive a truck especially in metro traffic!

Don't agree, and sorry you feel that way. Most folks I know have a good deal of respect for truckers and the difficult job they have. Hold your head high!

i admire truckers. without them the financial device might come to a stand nonetheless. My dad has been trucking for 10 years and that i easily grew up around them. basically 6 greater months till i'm sufficiently old to get my CDL A.

I don't know any truck drivers personally, but I can say some of them can be nasty and aggressive esp on the nj turnpike. They ride on your tail and I have seen a few cut right in front of other drivers and never even signal they are moving over. So I'm not so quick to think it's the car drivers who are showing disrespect. There is two sides to every story!!
