The format is 2-3-2. The team with homecourt advantage gets the first two and the last two games at home. It adds a little more drama to the series.

The format of the Finals is different...
...Instead of the usual 2-2-1-1-1 format, its 2-3-2.
This is for ratings, and a closer series.
In short, its to make more money for the leauge, and attract more viewers

travel expenses.
Back in the Bird/Magic era, usually when they met, back then it was 2-2-1-1-1 (h-a-h-a-h, home, away) format. When this caused flights coast to coast every other day, jetlag became an issue. The NBA decided to change the format to better accommodate the teams and lessen the travel.
