It sounds like you are doing the right things. Your child might have asthma- it can present very early in life. The good news is that if it's not an allergy and in fact asthma, many children grow out of it. Do you have a family disposition to allergies or asthma? My 16 month old son had an asthma attack for the 1st time this weekend ( my husband is a severe asthmatic so we weren't shocked ) but I am a pediatric nurse and my husband is a pharmacist and it was scary. I kept thinking how scary it must be for folks without medical backrounds, etc. You are doing the right things- just hang in there!
By the way: don't listen to this nonsense about albuteral not being "good" for your child- not being able to breathe is not good for your child! Listen to your doctors! Also, someone suggested doing chest physiotherapy ( patting on chest to loosen congestion ) PLEASE don't attempt this before consulting your doctor- that is a medical procedure and you could hurt your child!

I don't know what is wrong with your child and don't pretend to have the sole answer to the problem. However, a technique that can be used to break up congestion is to cup your hand slightly and gently pat him on the chest. The light concussion will loosen congestion in most cases. Do it every couple of hours for a few minutes. Don't do it very hard. It's not necessary and it can cause internal damage if done too vigorously.
Good luck.

i just had this same problem with my boy (he is now 9 mo and also a twin). his doctor also had him on albuterol and that didn't work. he ended up having a sinus infection (we went through a couple of months of doctors appointments). i guess it is not common at his age when he had it also about 4 months. if the anitbiotics didn't work we would have had to see an allergist also. he seems to be the one who gets colds a lot more too. hope this helps.

By any chance, has the doctor checked him for cystic fibrosis?
I've had overactive sinuses since I was a child. If I don't take my medication, I can't breath even when sitting. Maybe your son has a similar problem to mine, but I hope not. It sucks.

If you have pets in the house it could be a dander reaction-my son was born allergic-very rare but it does happen. We had him on a asthma machine and medication and he eventually outgrew the problem.
