People act like there is something serious wrong with it. It's not allowed in the military either. They have a whole selfmutlation clause. partly due to health resons, but little things like cutting your self shouldn't matter if you take care of it properly.

It's a disturbing idea that someone would actually cut into their own bodies as much as if you were doing it to others. It's also a sign of mental instability. In the military, who would want to team up with someone who had such deep seated issues? If a person does have the urge to cut themselves, they should seek help through a therapist to deal with the underlying problems. Cutting is not the answer, just like alcoholism or drug abuse.

In the military you are agreeing to keep yourself fit for training and possibly combat. It is clear why you should agree from the start not to mutilate yourself.
In your own home, there should be no reason why you can't do what you will. If you know of any laws pertaining to someone doing just that, it probably can be traced back to the influence of insurance companies. It's your right to do either way, but make sure you keep the parts on ice, just in case you change your mind later..

It scares people. They think it's just a cry for attention, that people might cut to deep and kill themselves by accident (yeah, right, like I can't control how far into my arm the razor blade is going), that people who cut are also necessarily suicidal, or other such nonsense. Sure there's the potential to get an infection, but people who smoke might get lung cancer, alcohol damages your liver, fatty foods clog your arteries and might cause a heart attack or stroke. I've been cutting myself off and on for three years and have never had in infection. If you don't cut very deep, and treat it with antiseptics and a bandaid afterwards it's just not that likely to get infected. Not that cutting is a good thing, but I certainy don't see it as any more destructive than drinking or smoking.

Because normal people don't purposely harm themselves. It is something that others find abnormal and repulsive.
