How to keep photos and music on my ipod but erase them from my hard drive?

When you update it erases pics and music that have been taken off the hard drive.

Let me see if I got this one right. You want to delete the items from your hard drive, keep them on your iPod and also be able to update your iPod with new items while keeping the old items. If that is what you meant, that feat, cannot be done. At least there is none I know of but then i can't know everything, if there is a workaround out there, I am not aware of it.

Try buying a second hard drive (a 20 gig for desktops comes for $20-30) and put the music and pictures on there.
