It's a republic in that we elect officials to represent us. We don't elect the president, we have an electoral college to do that. We don't vote directly on issues (some states do, but not at a Federal level). We vote for people that we believe will represent our views and our concerns.

The U.S. is a mix of a republic and a democracy. A republic is like the senate. A full democracy would mean that the people would have to vote everyday for passing policies. It is hard enough getting people to vote for the president. Imagine the chaos if everyone had to vote for a bill daily. So, instead we vote for the senate, republic, to vote for us. We put our trust in them.

It is a republic. It is not a democracy (in a true democracy, everyone would have a say - everyone does not. Our representatives vote for us - hence a republic)

Our nation is a representative democracy. It can also be referred to as a Federal Republic, because states retain certain autonomous rights that the Federal government can not usurp.
Our system is "Federal" because we have separation of powers between the national, state, and local governments. Our system is a "Republic" because we don't vote directly on laws, but rather elect legislators to craft these laws on our behalf.
In a representative democracy, citizens elect officers and representatives (Congressmen, Senators, governors, mayors), who they trust to work in their interests.

The two are not mutually exclusive. A republic is pretty much anything that isn't a monarchy.
