in selecting a school for my daughter I found a website about different schools that had everything from the school grade (Florida schools are graded from A -F based on many different things) to the percentage of what race attended them. It seemed to me that the higher rated schools had a larger number of white students. So I basically selected her school on the one that had the greatest percentage of white children. What do you think? I never considered myself racist.

If you indeed chose the school because of the color population then, yes that was a pretty racist thing to do. On the other hand, however, if you chose the school for the score, and it just happen to have a higher number of white kids, then that would not be racist. From the sounds of the question you made the choice based on color. Boooo.

and for what it's worth I think everyone is at least a little bit racist. It is how you respond to it that is dangerous.

Those attending school should always choose the best school available to them, regardless of student demographics. If you went mainly for the percentage of white kids, then you may have some latent racist tendencies you will want to address. If you were going strictly for the school's grade, then no, you're not being racist - seeing the correlation between grade and racial makeup was merely a coincidence.

One of the issues of "celebrating diversity" is that some people feel pressured to hang out with people of different ethnicities, and any relationship they might have won't feel totally honest if they feel forced into them. I'm sure your daughter's school with have plenty of non-white students, and she should feel free to interact with them as she would with any white student. They're all just students with very similar concerns, after all, and color/ethnicity shouldn't be a huge barrier to getting to know each other or developing friendships/relationships. But such relationships should never be forced in an attempt to not look "racist." If they're forced, it's hard to think they'd ever be *genuine* friendships, right?

Did you judge by the race or by the rating?

obviously you're not a racist if you just happened to notice that primarily white school rated higher. A lot of the times that has to do with the area that the school is in. Poorer areas tend to have lower education and for some reason unbeknownst to me those areas tend to have a high minority concentration thus so do the schools. It has to do with the area and the funds not with the race of the students.

Odd isn't it, that the better schools had the fewer number of minorities? I guess you're learning what so many of us already knew, but aren't allowed to mention due to "tender feelings". Truth can be so damning, can't it?

Yes, you were being racist, though probably unwittingly so. However, that's not a bad thing as some might have you believe. I moved away from my home so my son could benefit from an education free of the constant disruption of "certain people". If you care about your child, you can do no less.

No i dont think you are racist i think this website is even mentioning the different number of races at a school does it really matter how many black or white kids go to a school the focus should be on education and morals.

No, not at all. You were just estimatinng the quality of the school based on the percentage of white children attending, because statistics would agree. You just learned how racist our government is, though.

FYI: I'm a dark skinned man of Puerto Rican heritage. Believe me, I have nothing against minorities.

Not necessarily you are looking for a good school for your child. However it is important to keep a watch on one self. I saw a file this week "The Eye of the Storm" It was about a teacher who did an experiment on racism over 20 years ago. It is the most profound and telling film on the subject I have ever seen. It will show you your faults and it will make you nearly cry to see what we have done to our kids, our selves and it will expose what Hitler did to an entire country.
It is chilling get it you will have to search to find it. Good luck if you are a racist it will tell you. I dont think you are but the last criteria you used wasnt the best criteria available.

No I do not think that would label you as a racist. Because you said that they had higher grades. If the schools with the higher number of African American had higher grades you probably would have picked that school. I live in Central Alabama where there is a lot of racism so believe me this does not deem you a racist.

NO; u picked the best for ur daughter. that is a good parent. did u get the info from a registered schools site? iam not sure i like them giving a race percentage, race should not matter how the school is rated. it needs to be on how the students are tought .

If you choose the school based on their "grade" issued by the state then I would say that you are not a racist. I'm sure that you will get alot of answers with a spin on how that person looks at it, but I wouldn't worry to much.
