My stepson said there was some giant Japanese mythical racoon that has huge....I kind of did not believe him, but he told me he was sure it was true because his mom told him and she is Japanese. True or false?

Even today, ceramic Tanuki statues can be seen everywhere around Japan, especially outside restaurants and bars, where the Tanuki beckons drinkers and dinners to enter (similar to the role played by Maneki Neko, the Beckoning Cat, who stands outside retail establishments). The beckoning Tanuki is most often depicted with a big round tummy, gigantic testicles, a flask of sake, a promissory note, and a straw hat.

The Tanuki historically has mythical powers, as I recall they can change into human form, and end up robbing you blind!! (In one of the Mario games they could wear a Tanuki suit too ...!)

True. It is called a Tanuki. The exagerated part is a sign of fertility and therefore prosperity. Their statues are often seen displayed at the entrances to restaurants and businesses.

I'd like to be a pheonix probably. They're utterly spectacular and majestic. There is also the choice of dragon, those creatures are beautiful and powerful. A wonderful combination. =D

Its called a tanuki. Usually referred to as a "racoon-dog" but is no relation. Is considered to be a trickster spirit but is usually portrayed as having his testicles thrown over his shoulder and pounding on them like a drum.
