I have some songs in my itunes folder that are 6MB each! that seems excessive.

4MB = 4 minutes in 128kbps bitrate

It depends on how long the song is and what bitrate it was encoded at. Assuming a 128Kbps bitrate then 1 minute is approximately 1MB. At higher bitrates such as 192Kbps 1 minute will be more than 1MB though I lack exact figures.

most mp3 files with excellent quality >160 take up 5 - 10 MB for a normal size song. 128 encoding sounds a bit tinny on the highs and symbols...
