Ok, everyone on T.V. always make fun of Kansans. For example: I was at a Lance Burton magic show in Las Vegas and he asked an audience member where he was from and he replied "Kansas". Then Lance replied with, "Welcome to the U.S." I thought it was funny, but do people really think that?

On average Kansans are among the most educated people in the U.S. We read more newspapers and watch more news than people in most other states.

People watch the "Wizard of Oz," see crazy protestors from Kansas at military funerals, and hear about the Kansas State School Board wanting to force their religious beliefs down the throats of Kansas school children (and they've been pretty much unsuccessful in doing this). These things are not representative of the state or the vast majority of its people.

If a hick means being open and friendly... willing to help strangers in need... and generally enjoying yourself and the company of others along the way.... Yep.... We Kansans are hicks through and through.... and thankfully so.

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and came out to Kansas for college in 1971. I stayed here but have been back many times to California to visit relatives. I'd never return there to live though. I enjoy living in Kansas too much.

the free dictionary on the internet states a hick is:
n.
A person regarded as gullible or provincial: "New Yorkers had a horrid way of making people feel like hicks" Louis Auchincloss.
adj.
Provincial; unsophisticated

So anyone can be considered a hick. Lance Burton was just getting a laugh.

#1 -- There are hicks in every state in the U.S. -- not just in Kansas. #2 -- There's nothing wrong with being a hick. I've lived a lot of years and in a lot of places all over the world. I like a lot of the hicks that I know a lot better than some of the other people I've met! To a large degree, "hicks" have a lot of the qualities that a lot of other people ought to aspire to ... (Like I said, sometimes you have to live a lot of years and meet a lot of people to realize what's what when it comes to "good people".)

How do you think the person from Kansas felt? People from
Kansas are just like people from any other state. I have visited
Kansas several for the dog races and other fun things.
Also the people there seem to be friendly. I think that in itself
is a point for Kansas!!

Kansas is a big state. There may be some "hicks" there, but you can't call an entire state that. I'm sure that there are some "hicks" in every state--but not a state that is entirely that.
