Recordable CDs can only have data burned on them once. Rewritable CDs can be used over and over again.

CD-R - recordable but WRITE ONCE. These are robust and can provide a long term backup, or duplicate of music CDs.

CD-RW, rewritable CDs. These can be re-written but not forever. Sometimes the preformatting gets lost, and so does the data. While you might be able to reformat and reuse, rewritable are not necessarily good for long term backups. A temporary copy of your data might be a good application. Sometimes, a CD-RW will only work in the drive that made it. So test it before you use it for transport purposes.

If your rewritable data is less than a couple hundred MB, you might be better off with a USB memory drive. These are fast and easy to use. The price is coming down, so keep your eyes open on this. I believe that this will replace CD-RWs, and CD-R backup for long term will be the only viable use.

By definition a recordable CD means you can record on it, or "burn" to it once. A rewritable CD means you can record on or burn to it multiple times.
