you often see a few lone trees in acres of planted fields. Why would there be just one of two trees in dozens of acres?

as a farmer I might be able to put more light on this question.
it is true that birds do drop seeds, then the trees grow, but most planted fields are bushhogged and plowed so that any new sapling would be destroyed. Some farmers purposely leave a few trees in the fields. if they pasture horses or cattle the trees provide shade. also the tree may provide erosion control if it is on a slope. I personally have trees in my fields to mark sink holes and large rocks that might damage my tractor.
There are many reasons that a lone tree would be in a field... perhaps the farmer looked at it and found beauty in it or perhaps his grandmother planted the tree before she died..

Well, there are plenty of answers...they are planted, birds are involved, they just "appear" one day...so I can't really answer THIS question...but I have heard people ask as to why, in Kansas, there are trees in lines; perfectly straight lines. I can actually answer that one (I know, I know, that's not the question, but I'm dying to tell...).
The line of trees that are seen on many fields here in Kansas were planted to show property lines and also to break up fields as in; one field for winter wheat, one field for corn and so on and so forth. Now with the buying and trading that goes on with property, they're not as much property "lines" as once they were first used for; but that was their original intent.
Just thought maybe someone would find that interesting.

In the praries the wind blows really strong sometimes and if you see rows of tress then they are there in purpose and are there to break the wind or else the top soil will be blown away in some cases and the farmer will lose thier crops seed soil and all

The Bird answer is correct as well as the fact that seeds can be blown around by wind and end up in the field.

I asked the same question to local farmers long time ago. I was told they were left there to provide shades for animals. As Brenda said.
