Thanks for getting this song in my head. I HATE this song!
And the reason I hate this song is because: If you think the song is about you, then you probably aren't vain. You probably are famous or at least important enough to one person that they wrote a song about you. It's not vain to think that something is about you when it really is.
If you don't think it's about you, then how does anybody have the right to call you vain? These are the reasons I hate this song, and you, Sharky, are the reason I won't be able to sleep tonight. Carly Simon's voice will be going through my head! AAAAHHH!!

Carly Simon rocks and sold the answer to whom she was talking about to one lucky man. Janet Jackson did a remix to the song with Missy Elliot too. I used to be vain. Over time I have changed.

Carly Simon has stated that it's definately not about James taylor although she won't say who it is about. The main contender seems to be Warren Beatty although I've also heard that it was about one of the Crosby, Stills Nash and Young members.
