According to MedLine:
"Due to the high mortality rate in the elderly population and the risk of permanent kidney damage, prompt treatment is recommended.
After obtaining a urine culture to identify the bacteria, antibiotics are selected to treat the infection."
This doesn't sound like something you want to fool around treating yourself.

If you aren't sure what type of infection you have, you really need to be seen by a doctor. However, if you think it is kidney or bladder, the best bet is to drink lots of cranberry juice. It cleans out the bladder and can help bladder infections and prevent them in the future.

Where do you hurt? If it's abdominal, it's a bladder infection, if your back hurts, it's the kidneys. In either case, you need antibiotics. Drinking water and cranberry juice will help to flush out the kidneys, but you need to go to the doctor.

Cranberry juice and vitamin C plus eight glasses of water can do miracles in curing kidney infections. This is most likely a bladder infection. It can be cured by consuming a diet of acidic foods or alkaline foods or supplements, but not a mixture of the two, because they cancel out the beneficial effects. Cranberry juice and the correct form of C are acidic. Do not use ester-C unless you take the alkaline route.

biogirl is right on the money. Go to the Doctor. A urinary tract, bladder or kidney infection can quickly get out of control and make you very ill. For future reference, drink a lot of water, cranberry juice, lemonade, any juice that has a high amount of citric acid. Avoid tea, and other caffeine drinks.

Antibiotics are the best way to go. If it's a bladder infection and it goes untreated, it could possibly turn into a kidney infection (that happened to me once). I'm not sure that it's the kind of thing that you want to just wait and see if it'll run it's course. Those things are miserable sweetie! Call your doctor, he'll give you some meds. Good luck!

Water won't cure an infection (of any kind). Medication is what cure infection. Water helps to push it on through and out of the system with the help of the medication. If you feel you have an infection of any kind, it's best to see the doctor so he can prescribed something for it.
