I am 27 weeks pregnant, and cooked shrimp, fish, hushpuppies and all that good stuff for my hubbie this fathers day.I have never been allergic to shellfish of any kind, yet about 30 min after eating my hands and face, feet, everything is kinda swollen, and I have since started vomiting.I KNOW vomiting is normal during pregnancy, but is it at all possible to develop and allergy suddenly, and one that would cause these symptoms? I also want to add, my husband and 4 yr old are fine, and they both ate the same meal.

No, I am not a retard, and that term is NOT P.C..As I work with developmentally disabled/mentally retarded.I know it is SAFE to eat some seafood, and the correct term for seafood is SHELLFISH...I was told to eat it in moderation, yet to steer clear of tuna, and especially albacore tuna, due to the high mercury content.I have taken benadryl, as one reply suggested, and feel much better now...Ob/GYN nurse...Thank you.I also spoke with my Dr, and she also said to take benadryl.I called my mother because I was not sure if anyone else in my family has an allergy to seafood/shellfish, and she told me she developed an allergy to seafood at 53..So, maybe it is something that runs in the family...Who knows...
Thanks again to any and all replies, even the ones that arent too smart..

you can develope allergies at any time even though you may have been able to eat it before. Seafood during pregnancy should be done in small moderation due to the mercury in seafood. ask your doctor, but right now you should take some benadryl (safe during pregnancy)

Sounds like you ate bad or undercooked fish. Allergic reactions to shellfish are common but usually include a rash, or swelling, redness and difficulty breathing. If you had none of these symptoms you probably did not have an allergic reaction.
However, you can develop this type of allergy any time.

you can eat shellfish during pregnancy... it's actually good for you. just avoid the raw stuff...

like you, i also developed an allergy to shellfish during pregnancy. i don't think it's pregnancy related, it's just one of those things that happen.

you know how they say you develop allergies every 7 years? i don't know if there is any truth to that but i'm 21 and i got the shellfish one. at 14 i got one to lilacs. so it seems to be following a pattern. that might be it?

Yes, it's entirely possible - you may also find yrself eating things you normally hate (for me it's applesauce - I HATE applesauce but apparently my baby loves it!)

Seriously though, shellfish is not recommended during pg because it has a high mercury content. So lay of the crustaceans. Also cheeses like Brie and Camembert which may contain bacteria that are harmful, and garlic which is a blood thinner. Caffeine is okay in moderation. I'm surprised your doctor didn't give you a list of foods to avoid - ask him for one next time you see him/her.

Yes, pregnant women are supposed to stay away from seafood - especially shellfish, call your doctor!

umm you shouldn't have eaten the shell fish because its the worst thing a pregnant woman can eat, there are many illnesses that can be transmitted by shellfish, including hepatitis A. Some food poisoning
