It's possibly due to the inexpensiveness of red paint, and just became a traditional thing:

>>Many barns in the northern United States are painted red with a white trim. One possible reason for this is that ferric oxide, which is used to create red paint, was the cheapest and most readily available chemical for farmers in New England and nearby areas.<<

There are a lot of thoughts on it. One of them is that red was the cheapest paint.

Farmers made the paint themselves -- skim milk, lime, linseed oil, and iron oxide, better known as rust. The red was the result of the rust. It coated the lumber on the barns and wore well. When more colors of paint became available, farmers stuck with the red, more out of entropy than anything else.

the sand they put in the paint a long time ago was a red clay base. mixing this would put a sealer on the barn and was the dark red. now i think people are just trying to stay in the past with color

It helped to beable to see it. and it also showed that the farmer had some money, to beable to pay for the paint. But not all barns are red. Most are brown wood and you just cant tell and they look red. People can paint their stuff whatever they want.
