What does it mean when a convicted criminal gets a suspended sentence?

It means the judge is saying to the defendant you are sentened to "x" but that is "suspended" if you don't make any mistakes during a set term of time - usually probation. If the defandant gets into trouble again the judge can "unsuspend" the sentence and apply it - like jail time or a fine.

It as one other person said the sentence will be placed on hold pending your behavior over a certain time frame. It is like an acd (adjournment contemplation discharge) where if you don't get another ticket in 6 months it will be dismissed but if you do the ticket in adjournment and the new ticket you will be tried for.

It means hanging!
