This morning when I came into work she started in on me abusively. Apparently there were a couple people who didn't show up this morning and one other was late. So she took out her frustrations on me. How do I stand my ground as a new employee without getting fired on the spot for asking her "What is your problem that you can't speak to me like I'm a human being?"

Many bosses are like this. First, make sure you are in the right. Second, you will either have to get used to it, or find another job. Although in today's workplace, you may want to speak to someone in human resources, but be careful about doing this. It could backfire on you.

I'm sorry that you are caught in that situation.

If she starts abusing you again, first make sure that you did nothing wrong (like being late w/o an excuse/permission). Second REMAIN CALM. Don't compound the problem by yelling back or talking in a raised voice. Let her vent, then calmly ask "Is there something that I can do to correct this problem?"

Start documenting your assignments - even provide her with a copy. If there is something that she specifically vents towards you, ask her if that new task should take priority over you other assignments and to clarify the task. Get her to refocus on the professional aspects of your duties. If she said that "employees were late" respond with "I am assigned to arrive at 10:00 AM. Do you want me here at a different time?"

Long term, you have to ask yourself if you will grow professionally in a job with a boss like that. Get a book on personalities in the workplace.

Good Luck

You should have a conversation with her behind closed doors. Never be critical of her or accusing, that will only make her defensive and since she is the boss, you will lose. You can ask her things like - What can I do to help you, etc. or say, "When you yell at me in front of everyone it makes me upset - how can we resolve this?"

Also, follow the company rules - she will have to yell at you about then. If she is completely unreasonable, then you can go to Human Resources and lodge a complaint. Be prepared that not all Human Resource departments are helpful on things like this though.

Good Luck!

Carry a pocket tape recorder with you and turn it on when she abuses you then there is no way for her to deny it when you speak to her boss. I have had bosses like that, they do not change if they think you will take it they will keep on giving it. I actually went off on one and they backed off, I did get fussed at for it but not fired they needed me more than I needed them. I hope you get this worked out. Good luck.

Say you didn't understand the situation and that it won't happen again. You shouldn't ever be late for work...especially if you are new. When I know I would be late I would contact a coworker to let my boss know that I will be in later.
