The rattle is composed of fibrous protein called keratin—as are your fingernails.

The rattle of a rattlesnake is actually made of old sheds of skin. Each time the snake sheds its skin, the rattle becomes larger. These skin remnants are comprised of keratin, which is the same substance which makes up our fingernails.
