We unplugged it and replugged it in and started it up after a few minutes and the sound works when it is in T.V. mode, but is mute when I try to play a DVD. What can be done to correct the electro magnetic zap it received?

Nice and simple to understand: your pretty much SOL. Maybe make your son realize that he is making you go out and buy a new DVD player, thats about it, because it has magnetized the other magnet in the player that reads the data, reversing the polarity, and therefore the sound signal is going the wrong way, which means that the sound receiver isnt receiving the sound, and that means "subtitles anyone?" Sorry.

Probably did some irreversible damage. Magnets shouldn't go near electrical equipment.
