They feel for you. They are sorry you broke you leg.
You don't get it?
Maybe we mis-use the word sorry....

Because they say they are feeling sorry for your loss/injury/difficulty or whatever. Why do law enforcement personal say: "I am sorry about your loss." To someone who just lost a loved one? They do it to be polite, and to show that they care. Be happy that your friends/family are sorry you broke your leg (I think you meant leg), how would you feel if they didn't care?

It's an expression of concern over your mishap. Just as they would be happy for you if something good happened. Just accept it as it is meant and don't try to dissect it.

They say it because... what else can they say? I was taught, however, not to say sorry but to just say "That sucks!", but.. yeah. It's a respect thing.. I guess. Because it does suck that that happened to you and .. they are sorry that it hapepned, get it?>
