If you have a device plugged into a USB or firewire port on your computer, the device reports it's status on bootup to the operating system.

A couple of things could be happening, if your device supports USB2 and you are plugging it into a USB1.1 port then theoretically your device could support data transfer at higher speeds.

If it is your printer, then if you are using a Paralle Port Cable instead of USB, then again, you would get higher data transfer using USB2.0.

If you are using a USB wireless device plugged into the USB port then this is also a possible culprit.

The best thing to do is try to track down which device that your computer is talking about by looking in the Device Manager of the Hardware tab of System Properties (Accessible thru the control panel or by pressing Windows Key-Pause).

Look at the different devices and try to figure out which devices are capable of running USB1.1, USB2.0, Firewire (1394), Paralell port, serial port...

You need more information. Did the problem just begin? The first answerer beat me because he types faster... I think we agree, so that must be your problem.

Hi There, The message is telling you "The device you plugged into the USB port is capable of using USB 2.0 and you have plugged it into a slower USB port.". In other words the message is for the device (not your computer). If you had a desktop you would be able to purchase a USB 2.0 card, plug it into a PCI slot, run the software (that came with the new card) and you would then have USB 2.0 which is quite a lot faster. Since you have a laptop you don't have that option so all you can do is ignore the message. Hope this answers your question. Al

You are plugging this device, which I assume is a wireless USB card, into a USB port. What windows is telling you is that the device can work faster if it is plugged into a faster port.

In most cases, what you are doing is plugging it into a USB 1.1 port with a USB 2.0 compatible device. The numbers are essentially meaningless (except to a techie) but USB 2.0 is much faster than 1.1 in terms of the amount of data it can transfer per second.

The device should be working fine, it just will not be able to operate at speeds it is capable of. Unless you upgrade your computer, you will always get this message when you plug a USB 2.0 device into a 1.1 port using Windows XP.

Maybe you have USB 1 device. The pc has USB 2 which is faster. Or the same re firewire 400/800. See if you have something connected to the pc that could go into another plug.

The device is probaly plugged into a USB 1.0 port if your computer is older it probaly doesn't have the newer and faster USB 2.0 port in new computers and since windows XP is compatible with USB 2.0 it wants you to connect through a USB 2.0 port.

P.S. this usually occours with storage devices.

If our talking about USB or firewire then you could have a product capable of running 2.0/800 when its only plugged into a USB 1.1/firewire 400.

Is it possible that it is referring to a USB port and it is suggesting that it be connected to USB 2.0? If so and you only have 1.1 then you can't without installing a new card.

there are various ports that are for USB connections ,
most modern laptops have one port that is wide band and can handle a lot of traffic ,

if you got one of those change your connection to that ,

and you can connect faster ,down load and upload faster
