I sincerely hope I can help you to feel better.

I was labelled 'Hyperactive' back before 'ADD' was common, but the word was being thrown around concerning myself, as a child. I spent many classes sent-out-in-the-hall, heh. Because this is a personal anecdote, I can only speak for myself - but I feel tremendously happy or 'successful' as far as my life thus far has unravelled.

These are my own appreciative 'levels of success'; but as an 'ADD child' (that has never taken medication to that end) I have never been in jail, had fulfilling jobs, became married, and attained numerous diplomas and certificates in my time. I have much of it left, but am sincerely happy with how my life has been.

Perhaps a better measurement would be Happiness. If you have a child with ADD, do not worry, as they may very well (despite ups and downs in life, as with all of us) end up 'happy' in the end.

(Please keep in mind, all situations are different, and others may need medication or proper medical treatment to perform acceptably in society). *Not to be impolite at all, but as well, do not gauge the 'success' of your/child life based on others'. Have a good attitude, and enjoy your own life/their life.. 8) Hope that helps.

If you medicate them, you give them an equal chance at life. If I was not on medication I would not be nearly as successful as I am now.

I know that wasn't your question exactly, but whether the child is medicated really makes a difference. They are often as successful as anyone once they are functioning normally.

Mine was a very difficult child as even an infant. As a toddler I cannot tell you how many times I ended up in tears trying to handle him. At 13 now, he is an honors student and handles himself very well. I took him off of medication last year and his teachers don't believe me when I tell them he is diagnosed ADHD. It takes a LOT of love, tears, and energy but it is possible for them to learn to redirect themselves and to control it. There is nothing an ADD child cannot achieve with the right direction and a whole lot of love. Children with ADD have to be taught to direct their energies in a positive way and focus on their strengths to develop the disability into a positive thing. Easier said than done sometimes but never give up.

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was a senior in High School. My son has ADHD, he is six and he has done perfectly fine. He reads on a normal level, he attends school without any problems. His biggest disadvantage is when he gets frusterated he doesn't know how to control his emotions and he starts hitting himself or punching things. But other than that, he is learning like any other child and no one knows that he has a disorder.

I'm not Bill Gates father but Bill is a college drop and the worlds richest man... I don't think you can do both and not have ADD.
