It seems that the default setting on the filter (max) is too much for such small tank. I was looking around for the recommended rate of the supplied filter (Whisper Micro Filter).

I am concerned that a too high GPH could be not good for the health of the fishes. Around 10 mini-fishes (i.e., bettas, and related).

As a general rule of thumb, you should aim to provide at least ten times the tank volume in circulation per hour. i.e. for a 400L tank aim for 4000L/hr in circulation. A 2.5 gallon tank is normally far too small for 10 fish, so the increased circulation would help keep enough oxygen in the tank for them to survive.

1. a pond pump is not really the best pump for your tank 2. you should find out the flow rate of the pump that comes with the filter, and try to match it. 3. do not add cold water to cool down the tank, do the other things you did or buy a chiller unit. add a fan to blow air across the top of the tank. 4. some pumps do give off more heat 5. 3 times an hour is a lousy flow rate, I use about 8 times the tank volume in flow for most freshwater tank, but I'm not sure what filter system you have, it may not take that much flow. But 3 times is no where near what is recommended.
