Persons fleeing the scene of an accident

In Canada Hit and Runs have a maximum penalty of 10 years, I have researched hit and runs for 3 years and no driver has ever received a maximum sentence. 2 years at the most and even then they never serve the full sentence because of parole etc. Do you that Hit and Runs (in Canada) should have a minimum penalty especially when they have either killed or injured another?

There can be many reasons why someone would commit the crime of a "hit and run".

First, they could be breaking the law in another manner, which caused the hit and run. Such as "driving underage" or without a license. Or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. If they stayed at the scene of the accident and the police showed up, they would be in even more trouble.

Some could be on probation or have their licenses suspended because of previous traffic infractions.

Insurance. It's something we all should have because it's against the law to drive without it. However, some people fail to have it and risk getting arrest and/or sued. Others only have minimal coverage and if you run someone over and seriously injure them, your "minimal insurance coverage" may not be enough to pay for their medicals bills, in which case they could sue.

Or it could be out of pure fear.

It's a crime to leave the scene of an accident though, so it would be in their best interest to stay until law enforcement arrives, no matter what the case.

like my nephew's, he was killed just resently by someone who knew what the did they hit him and backed over him and killed him.
He was only 22. The person that did it is still out there. and I will help police find him for my nephew cuz the person that hit him ran him over from behind .After my nephew in a fair fight won. this person is a cowerd and is not a real man. God will come for this evil person. He will pay for what he did

Because the laws are screwed up. If a person, even an adult, just runs out in front of your car, and there is no possible way for you to stop, and you hit them, it is automatically 100% your fault, not theirs for running in front of you. Then that person can sue your life away from you.

(Not saying I think it is OK when someone runs, just saying why some might do it.)

It is common world-wide about hit-n-run accidents. You can take an example of an Indian Bolly-wood Star "SALMAN KHAN", a famous celebrity, we can see due to money power and lethargic laws no quick action against these Bigs-shots, in my opinion the best way to control these type of cases in Hit-n-Run cases the best way to compensate by introducing strigent laws by the government by impounding of the vehicles, residential properties, bank account should be freezed, if these types of pressure is mounted then no one will dare to do, since it is the age of computer each and every Junctions,bylanes,High-ways everywhere if it fitted with secret cameras installed we can locate the culprits, if these types of measure not taken they may escape and they cannot be caught, to recover the entire cost for maintaining of Law n Order,Maintenance, Cost of Cameras and computer controlled station and maintenence of staff by way of recovering from the impounded vehicles, properties n freezing of bank accounts, this will deter any any Tom,**** or Harry to do the nuisance. It is the law makers who have to create fear and such type law breakers.

Sometimes people do not even realize they hit something or someone. I would imagine this happens to people that are DWI. Some people know they hit something or someone, and don't have insurance, or are DWI, or have outstanding warrants and are just scared and make a very BAD decision to leave the scene. People think just about themselves sometimes, and don't pay attention to how their actions affect other people.

people hit and run..because they panic... because they are wanted... because they are drunk or under the influence..because they dont want to go to jail. people who hit and run face other charges usually... not just fleeing.. that adds to the penalty. i dont have a way to verify that no one every does ten yrs or even if the max is ten.. but if someone is killed then it is no longer a hit and run... it is vehicular homicide. it could also be negligent or involuntary homicide in some places.

Panic, at such a time the brain shuts down for most people and their first reaction is to run. As I am sure you already know most of them regret it later. So really you just can't blame them for their first reaction. It is Fight or Flight. And in such a situation there is nothing to Fight so Flight is what takes over.

Because they are afraid and their fear is too strong for their weak minds. Thay cannot face the consequences of their deed and they run like cowards, run from the place of the accident and from their own minds, hoping to forget but they can't and soon they turn to darkside.
And though it's the easier path it isn't the better one.
REMEMBER.

Because they are afraid of their own actions. They would stay but they know if they stay they will have to pay for the accident. The hit and run is illegal, but if you never get caught, its free. The truth hurts.
