Aside from meds, you'll have to deal with the pain. I would advise though to make sure you do your prescribed physical rehab and then some more on your own if you want to regain full range and use of that knee. If you baby it to long and give up on your rehab due to pain, the knee will never be a 100%.

Your best option without any subscribed painkillers, is what the doctor recommended and Ibuprofen, advil, tylenol or another over the counter painkiller. If they gave you excercises to do, make sure you work through them and do them, it will get easier. If you are supposed to ice it, do that. Sometimes ice has a numbing effect. Follow Doctors orders and if it is too much to bear, call their after hours service for help. Prescription painkillers can be incredibly addictive and they do not like to prescribe any more than absolutely necessary.
If you are 21 or older, you could take the edge off with a glass of wine -- if you are laid up and not driving or working. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Best way is to keep his mind off it and help him out the best you can. Don't let him get lazy though, or his knee will really hurt when it's time to start walking again. watch movies with him, or talk to him, keeping the mind busy. If he has time to think about the pain, he will go nuts.

put a bag of ice on ur knee and take an aspirin (this might not help much but hey, it's something). I've also heard that horse medicines work (it's kind ok a lotion they put on horse's legs when they get hurt, but i can't remember it's name)
