If you're talking about a push mower, then a quart is way too much oil. Your crankcase is so full of oil that it's getting past the rings and burning off in the combustion chamber. Drain the oil and start again from scratch, making sure not to overfill it. It may smoke for a long time, but you probably haven't done any real harm to the engine.
One of my kids did this to a brand new mower a few years ago. The mower went on and worked for a long time. It always smoked a little when I started it though.

How old is it? what kind of mower is it 2cycle (do you mix gas and oil or just put gas in the gas tank and oil in a different place.)
if gas and oil go in 2 different places then you may have a bad ring in the motor allowing oil into valvues allowint it to burn out the the exhaust port and if that is the case you will need another mower. Also if you have a weed eater that you mix gas and oil with and by chance used the wrong gas in it that would make it smoke also. However If you get too much oil in it then it will smoke also so you may want to drain out all the oil and refill being carefull not to overfill. so sorry can't answer exactly but you didn't give allot of information. Hope that helps you.

you do no longer grant sufficient recommendation. Did the engine end once you hit the rock? Is it a sparkling mower? Push or rider? Hitting a rock will harm the engine yet there's a key between the crankshaft and flywheel it particularly is there to ward off inner harm to the engine in circumstances like this. If that secret is sheared from hitting the rock the engine won't run. The flywheel will could desire to be bumped off and the biggest replaced. you ought to additionally verify the blade for harm. eliminate the sparkplug cord earlier you attain decrease than the mower and continually tip the mower with the air filter out up so which you don't get oil into the carburetor/cylinder.

If its a 4 cycle (briggs, honda, tecumseh) you did check the level first? They take only 20 ounces.... not a whole quart!! what happens when you overfill it is, it froths up and the breather gets overloaded and the breather will spew whats not needed into the carb, and it'll smoke..... If you didn't see oil on the ground where it was sitting, its not leaking. A 2 cycle of course takes a oil/gas mix (2 stroke oil, not engine oil!!) and too much and it'll smoke.

Our lawn mower smokes a lot, it's due to burning oil!
