The three most likely explanations are that are:
1: you do not have enough memory for the applications and services that are being opened up at boot up time. You can find out and disable many services and applications that are being started by running a utility like Ace Utilities which has an auto start manager (there are many other programs that will tell you this).
2: your hard drive is extremely fragmented. You need to run the Defragmenter accessible through the My Computer icon > Select 'Manage' > Select Disk Defragmenter
3: you have a virus or a program that is causing a memory leak.
Memory is being allocated, but never freed up. I would recommend getting a program called Tune Up Utilities and using the MemOptimizer feature. This feature continually tracks your free memory and defragments it and writes unnecessary allocated memory to the hard disk to free up a reasonable amount of memory to allow you computer to run without locking up due to low available memory. You can also download many freeware apps that report free system memory. You should always have at least 20% free.
Also, explore articles about making sure that you have "virtual memory" configured. You should have at least 256MB of memory available to make a "paging file" that stores recently run programs and info that don't require your computer to search for files, pictures and data on the Hard Disk when you just opened that data a few minutes ago. This a cache of information that is searched before doing an entire search of your HD to find information required by your computer. This is expensive to system resources.

What I would do, if I were you, is press
Alt Ctrl Del If you are running a new Microsoft OS this should have something pop-up.
This is good.
Press the Performance tab at the top of this pop-up. If you press the CPU button you should see what is using all you RAM. This could be a cause of the freezes. If something doesn't look familar and it is using a good percentage of RAM write it's name down and look it up. You should research if that program is needed for your Operating System. If it is not I would look into deleting it.

Hmm my vista workstation freezes at the same time as i'm playing video games on it yet not frequently at the same time as i'm merely doing everyday stuff on it. Ask a IT guy or contact microsft or apple or ask an apple/microsoft guy at a bestbuy or destiny keep or some thing like that. Probaley an IT guy that works with macs and computers because that some hate the different variety!

If your computer is an older model, the programs you are trying to run on it might be causing it to freeze up. Hard to say with so little info.

Many things could cause it. Spyware, viruses, registry errors, clogged memory.
The best thing to do if you want a smooth running system again is to back up all your important data onto CD's or some other media, and then totally reformat and reinstall windows (or whatever os you are using.)

you may have too many programs running at once, or you may also have some spyware/viruses. run a spyware/virus scan. also try deleting any unused programs(aftermarket not factory ones)and free up some space.
