One cost is safety. After 9-11, people gave up their freedom to carry box cutters on airplanes in order to feel safer from terrorists. Most societies gave up the freedom to kill each other in order to feel safer from getting killed. Rich people move into gated communities to be safer from crime, but give up more freedom since there are so many extra rules they need to follow to live there. Really rural areas can be dangerous since it takes authorities much longer to reach you, but you have more freedom to do what you want since there are fewer people that can complain. True freedom would mean zero safety.

True freedom is priceless. That is how it is ironic: we have decade-long wars all over the world that pay thousands and even millions of lives and millions of dollars for something that should be an inalienable right to everyone.
