The hot air balloon was invented by the Montgolfier brothers in France in 1783.
In 1853, Englishman George Cayley made the first manned glider flight.
The airplane was first successfully flown by the Wright Brothers in 1903.

The first heavier-than-air aircraft was flown on December 17, 1903, by Orville and Wilbur Wright, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio.
Earlier that same year, Samuel Pierpont Langley of the Smithsonian Institution tried and failed several times in his attempts at heavier-than-air flight.
