Given the recent scandalous and corrupt behavior within the U.N., and our government's apparent lack of will to deal with it directly, what would you propose as a solution?

Should the U.N. disband, reform, or maintain status quo?

And, if the U.N. does not reform, or if status quo is maintained, should the U.S. relinquish it's membership to this organization?

Your thoughts...

Wow! Some really good answers here...
It seems that most of you share my sentiment on this issue.

I wrote a brief but scathing response to Dr. Deepak Chopra's question about the U.N.'s Millenium Promise goals. If you'd care to view it, here's the link:

And please, feel free to vote. Were my response to get "Best Answer" I think it would send Dr. Chopra a strong message about our feelings about the U.N.

What the UN needs is a good dose of (well deserved) ridicule.

The United States should produce a short film, humorously highlighting the gross ineptitude and ineffectiveness of the U.N. As the saying goes, "sunlight is the best disinfectant". We need to put a spotlight on these UN cretins and expose their criminal hypocrisy.

Why use humor rather than an outright, serious review of the UN's monumental failures? Because as Mel Brooks pointed out, dictators can be toppled through ridicule. That is why he never produced a serious film about Hitler. He ridiculed Hitler instead. Humor works better.

The U.N is just a vehicle for other nations to oppose the U.S. I think we should get out, and let French taxes pay to host it in Paris. The last thing the U.N. cares about American lives or interests. Progressives might want a world based enity to look over all the "world's children", but that doesn't work.

The UN needs to reform....and grow some balls. They sanctioned Hussein with 17 resolutions....he ignored them all. Why? Because he could. They are a peace keeping organization, not a peace making one, there is a big difference. People think it is such a perfect organization...but there is corruption there like everywhere...
If they do not reform, the US should just bail...they never agree with us anyway, and why would they? It only takes one dissenting vote on the security council to give an offical vote of "no"...it's all politics..it depends on who likes us that particular day... with France sitting on the council...why would we ever get clearance for anything? They voted down US invasion of Iraq..well duh, France was in on the oil for food scandal.....come on now people..lets all take a good look at what is really going on.

In the first place our leaders let the UN get out of their real meaning or the real job they were to do!!! In the second place WE STARTED PAYING THE BILLS which was wrong from day one. Then we let them get away with stealing plus just about everything that is against the law. NOW OUR LEADERS CAN NOT CORRECT IT WITH OUT HURTING SOME OF OUR FRIENDS. WHAT A MESS.

They either need to radically change the UN or abolish it because of their corrupt behavior, their scandalous activity and their failure to do anything positive to help people in need. The US does it all on their own now and the UN never does anything worthwhile to help so what good is it?

The U.N. should be booted from NY, free up some prime real estate, and be sent to Paris or somewhere else willing to welcome these misfit, useless, and corrupt bureaucrats.

The U.N. is a waste of space.

I take issue with your use of the word "recent". The UN has sucked for decades. We should not only pull our membership, but boot that candy *ss organization right off that prime property they are squatting on in NYC.

I think they should Reform it! If they can not do that, disband it.

The way they chose leaders is almost pathetic.

They create resolutions for crisis situations but cry when it is time to enforce it. (UN Resolution 1441 for example)

We should remove ourselves from the U.N. and the U.N. should be expelled from the United States.
