Must See:
-The Merlion along the waterfront at night, more beautiful at that time.
-The Zoo, 2nd best in the World to San Diego's, get a triple attraction ticket and save money to also enjoy the Night Safari (just across, & opens when zoo closes) and the Jurong Bird Park.
-Sentosa, take the cable car there and go up the Merlion there for a great view of Singapore..unless you're afraid of heights. Enjoy the mini island attraction.
- Chinatown (Sri Mariamman Temple), Arab Street (mosques) & Little India (mostly hindu temples) for some culture, shopping and food.
- Bugis Street (there's a Chinese temple there) and Orchard Road for the local shopping areas.
Must Eat: july is the SIngapore Food Festival
- Chilli Crab (Ponggol Seafood @ East Coast)
- Fish Head Curry (Banana Leaf Apollo @ Race Course Road)
- Nonya Laksa
- Roti Prata with the curries, Roti John
- Hainanese Chicken Rice, Fried Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow with the cockles
- Mee Rebus, Mee Siam, Mee Soto, Satay
- Ice Kachang, Chendol, Cheng Tng, Bubur Hitam, Bubur Terigu from any dessert stall
- Bandung from the drinks stall (contains milk)
Temples:
Buddhist temples basically don't have much "rules" but do ask if you have to remove your footwear and if you can take photos if you want to. One of the grander temples is the Kong Meng San Phor Kar Si Temple in Thomson area but the one in Bugis would be good enough if you want to watch how people go about their faith.
Mosques might not allow females in.
Hindu temples require you to remove your footwear while Sikh ones will also require you to cover your head. You might be lucky enough to see one of the processions as they are really bright, colourful and beautiful.
Basically you gotta ask before you enter just to be sure you don't offend anyone.

Must see places include the Zoo (one of the best in the world), night safari and sentosa.
Local (or somewhat local) dishes to try are chicken rice (you can find this everywhere), oyster omelette, bbq stingray (normally with lots of chilli on it), chilli and pepper crabs, and a lot more. Basically eating is one of the main pastimes for Singaporeans so there's a huge variety and selection.
As for temples, you can try the Chinatown area where there are a couple of Chinese and Hindu temples. In addition, you should also visit the Godess of mercy temple near Sim Lim square (where you can also get great deals on electornics/computer parts and pheripherals. You should also know that temples, mosques, churches etc dot the entire island so it's pretty easy to locate one.
For shopping, Orchard road is the main shopping belt and funan and sim lim are the places to go for electronics.

Temples? Can't help you there *sorry*
Restaurant/ Dishes? Go to Newton Circus for variety/ Singapore is known for their Oyster Omelette, Prawn Noodles, etc
Highlights? Go see The Gurney Esplanade, Shopping at Orchard Road, Great Seafood at Boat Quay, Suntec City, Sentosa Island or just simply sign up for a sight seeing tour of the local sights.

Orchard road is the best place for shopping - tons of malls and everything you could imagine. If you're there, try the street ice cream vendor on the street.
Sentosa Island is good too, they have underwater world (just like sea world), the merlion, and many others. Other than that, try the Jurong Bird Park and the Zoo (they have night safari too).
As far as food, try street food. Don't go for chain restaurants. I'd prefer going to MRT station and tried out local food court there. It's cheaper and the food are tastier. But if you're not used to the street food, don't force yourself.
