Research has shown that majority of buyers chose the middle option - neither too cheap nor too expensive (called "compromise effect"). Would Sad people also chose something in between or go for the highest or lowest priced product? Any experience or anecdote would help.

When I am sad, but hopeful, I buy more expensive products and more non-essentials. When I am happy I buy more expensive products and non-essentials.
When I am sad and at a loss and have no hope or no clue, I don't buy anything-even food-unless I can't do without it.
Any other time I buy the most expensive, best quality thing I can find (that I want/need) at the lowest possible price: usually around 65-80% off retail.

That's a good QUESTION !! I have seen people that do that. It's like when you are hungry and want something to eat the first place you end up going into is.... THE GROCERY STORE.... DRUM ROLL PLEASE THE PLOT THICKENS AS the old saying goes. After realizing that you needed to eat before entering the stores it's too late right? ! you've done spent about a $100 bucks on groceries you can't afford sooooooooo... you put it all back and go.... to guess where ? The restaurant and spend a lousy $20.00 and feel quilty more about the$ 20 you shouldn't have spent than the hundred that you shouldve and could've. So next is Walmarts or Kmarts right? that will really make you feel even better than the grocery store did, well that's what you tell yourself anyways huh ? !! May advice is this: try not to go shopping anywhere's whether it be to make yourself feel better by buying clothing you can't afford or buying that one or two outfits that will only cost you about a hundred bucks or more especially when there are others in the family to consider too. There's really no get quick cure except for this: THINK BEFORE YOU GO SPENDING THAT MONEY THAT YOU DON'T HAVE CAUSE once it's gone it's gone, especially when comes to allllllll those groceries that you talked yourself into buying when you have a houseful to begin with .When it comes to clothing same thing applies don't do just because ... do it because you really need that item(s) . HOPE THIS HELPS YOU. Remember there are no quick anedotes that i have heard of or know of at all.

When I am depressed I often cruise the malls and buy things, middle priced, not too expensive but not the cheapest either. Mostly I buy stuff I did not really need just stuff I thought would cheer me up. It works for a bit, then I get sad again because I have no more money, so it is a vicious circle

I don't do that, but someone I know does. I never really thought too much about it until I saw your question. It didn't occur to me that this was a real "thing." I will start pointing it out every time he goes over budget because he is depressed. I am sure he will thank you . . .
