The Roman Empire ruled over quite a bit of the earth's surface.. then that disappeared; the Arabs (who the Americans hate so much) ruled an equally large part of the world for a while, they taught the Europeans the modern number system and even invented algebra (I believe somebody called al jebr first used it whence the name), they taught the Europeans architecture and ship building, and did their own little bit to spread their religion as well, but in time their supremacy was gone. For people in America that want to bomb the Arabs to stone age, well, actually white people are NOT in the stone age because of the Arabs (no Arabs => no modern number system =>no zero => no modern math => no technology => no bomb). But anyways in time the Arab civilization lost its premier position. The British Empire rose and fell. Well the American Empire has risen. Let's see how many of you think it will never fall?
If you want , you can state your reasons for or against.

May be some people got their panties in a bunch for my saying American Empire. Allright, how about "American Empire" in quotes.
BTW, Rome was a "Republic" too to start with. But when we look back we don't say the Roman Republic, we say Roman Empire. The word Senate was borrowed from Rome.
People never fail to amaze me with their ignorance.

America is absolutely an Empire. Americans as a culture group may not like the term, but is is 100% accurate. Arabs are not hated by Americans at all, In fact, My Brother goes to school in Michigan, their is a city called Deerborn, which have the most of people from Iraq outside of Iraq anywhere in the world. We are both Christian, as is my whole family, and we have many middle eastern friends, who are Muslim. Minarets ring bells in the street 5 times a day, the libraries have special places in the chance that a Muslim happens to be studying when it comes time to pray, as well as a few other things cherished by Islam (some places have quebla walls just to be respectful, and show understanding) Americans hate Islam Fundamentalist, this is not hypocritical of the culture group, we for the most part, hate Christian fundamentalists as well, Groups like the KKK who are intolerant, and hostile. can you answer this....Why are we not allowed to have a church that rings it's bell for us on Sunday?
Enough of American politics, lets get to history and facts. After the Roman Empire fell, England was the next Empire. Arabs, Muslims were never an Empire. Mohammad got kicked out of Mecca and went to Medina where he became the Political, religious and military leader. He went back and Conquered Mecca and then preceded to conquer the Middle East and North Europe. Going as far as even conquering Spain, which they only ruled for a short time. (it is from this time modern bull fighters use the word "O'lay" in the ring. It is a variation of Allah.) This is a far as they went spreading religion. They have ruled basically the same territory for 1400 years. their supremacy has been very consistent.
the definition of an Empire is - 1: the domain ruled by an emperor or empress (to all Americans this can also include a King, Queen or President)
Although Islam conquered a lot of land they were never the dominate rule. Their is a wealth of history that shows this. Italy, Greece, Asia, and Europe were all well established Independent societies by then, that Arabs did not or had ever dominate or rule over.
Arabs did invent the concept of zero, but the Maya invented Algebra. The Greeks will argue the only reason Arabs had a number system if because they invented it with Geometry. Which is very obvious in ancient Arab architecture, they are known for 3 things, bright colors, plants/animals and Geometric Patterns. Arabs and Europeans learned this when they were ruled by Rome after Rome learned it from the Greeks.
Mesopotamia is called the cradle of life, but Egypt is older. Look at their architecture. Their is no proof as to who taught who what as far a pyramids and ziggurats go. Rome invented the Arch,(this is the father od scalloped, horseshoe, and pointed arches of Islam) and the Pantheon, which is the basis for all Mosques all over the world. Before their were ships, their were boats and these clearly was started by Egypt, and they were good at it, they basically just went up and down the Nile. It was the Greeks that invented Ship Building as we see it today. They needed to for Trade. Greece is basically a mountain, very little places to grow wheat, do they developed a mode of transportation that allowed them to trade grapes (wine) and Olives (oil) for wheat. This is the real reason for the Trojan war, who it is believe to have occurred around 1100 bce.
Why people write Americans, instead of, the American government, or the current administration, is a profound problem with the world. Americans are not hateful, we get up everyday and go to work, take care of our kids, and feel awful watching the news at night.
Why can't the Arabs see what we see. In this country we have people from every corner of the globe. We allow every religion their church, anyone can shop, work, eat dinner where they please with whoever they please. Here, a Muslim, a Catholic, a Christian, and a Hindu can all go out, talk, eat, and get along. Their are no tanks in the streets, no police in the streets with guns waiting for gun fire between religious groups to beak out. Why can't it be like this in the Middle East? Americans do not hate Arabs. We know that the majority are just like us, get up, go to work, love their kids. We know Arabs are not all fundamentalists.
Their is 2 sides to every blade. Arabs would still be in the stone ages if it were not for many people and cultures who came before and taught them, as would America. If it was not for Arabs, we would have no zero, no beautiful mosques, Minarets, quebla walls, and no one to show us an alternative perspective of religion. Wonderful music. And in my own Opinion Arabic Calligraphy is the most beautiful writing in the world. If it was not for America, Arabs would have no electricity, no phone no Internet. as well as countless other technological advances that have ben made since the industrial revolution. Why don't the Arabs thank us for this?
Religious, military, and political leaders have all socialized us to think a certain way and some do things for their own personal agendas that effect millions of people. Maybe sometimes right, maybe sometimes wrong. At the end of the day most are just people Arab or American. I am very much an idealist and I pray one day to be able to explore the cradle of civilization with openness and no fear, the way, I hope any Arab can come to America and see the good we have.
When you see rude things some say... think fundamentalist.
Lacelot682005 - Rome was an Empire the same way we are a nation and a country (look up the definition so you are not ignorant to what I am saying)
Also, Read the rise and Fall of the Roman Empire this shows where you are just stupid, the Roman Empire ended, because they tried to rule too much for the military to handle. They didn't have the defense to protect Rome when Alarick (a goth) banded his and other slaves of the empire and over threw them. That sounds more like todays conservatives, trying to rule the world while the slaves (all us who have to work to make sure the capitalist get their money) are all watching and deciding we have had enough) If they would have stayed in Rome with their Gay Marraige and Free Love they may still be an Empire to this day.
America's political structure is Olagarchy, not Republic, Hey don't believe me, look at Ancient Sparta's govermental structure. France did and we liked how that worked for them.

1st we are not an empire. 2nd the Arabs were, for a long time, the most advanced. But for some reason they seemed to like the 1600's and just stayed there. I don't ever think the U.S. will fade or anything, hopefully we will continue to lead. I am an American, by the way.

Your memory fails you Skywalker.... Get out of the TV set and read some history books.
What made the Roman Government collapse?
What the Liberals strive for today was more like what was going on when that government met it's final end.
Stop basing your feelings as facts.
You say people never amaze you with Ignorance, but your stupidity is amazing.
Ignorance is not knowing. Stupidity is knowing and failing to act.
Those who chose to ignore History are doomed to repeat it.
The Romans beleived in Gay Rights and "Free Love" Sorta Sounda like the democrat's of today don't it?
A republic is a form of government, not a Governmental Party.
The USA us a Representative Republic.
Rome was NOT a republic, but was a dictatorship rulled by people like JULIUS CAESAR.
See, more stupidty, or Ignorance?

wow, shannon kinda took the cake there
wow, you deserve the 10 points there
i don't think i have much to add to that whitty reparte
i am simplistic in my thinking (call me a minimalist)
it is my sincerest hope that i don't live to see the fall of this great nation, nor my children either.
i believe that our nation is empirical in it's grandeur and vast geographical holdings. however, unlike an empire, we don't seek to constantly acquire new properties by means conquest. we as a government usually return the territory over to a newly erected native democracy, made to mirror our own. unless it is the wish of the native people to remain an annex and continue to recieve our military and financial security. at least, that seems to be the goal at hand. and i, for the most part, support that idea.
regardless of the "who begat whom" of our numerical system, the point is moot. at the moment it is irrelevant because it is already done and cannot be undone. bombing them all "to the stone age" will not undo all that the world has (or has not) learned from them.
romans voted julius cesar as emporer for life and augustus took it and ran with it. whether or not he had the right to do so? again the point is moot. no american will ever allow this in the present day. whosoever would be dumb enough to seek this post would become the most hunted man in this country.
lancelot came off as a well read idiot, who seemingly fails the "reading and comprehension" section of the test of life.
ok, back to shannon,
"the definition of an Empire is - 1: the domain ruled by an emperor or empress (to all Americans this can also include a King, Queen or President) "
'fraid not... how can anybody compare an emperor or king, who both rule absolutely from coronation till death or abdication. to a president who governs (not "rules") for between four to eight years and no more? how can this be done by anybody engaged in an intelligent debate?
just sound this out with me here....
emperor is to king as king is to president? ........ FALSE
quote wiktionary:
empire (plural empires)
1.) A group of states or other territories that owe allegiance to a foreign power.
2.) A state ruled by an emperor.
3.) Any vast area under the power of one person; most commonly used in business, e.g. "the McDonalds empire".
quote shannon:
"Mesopotamia is called the cradle of life, but Egypt is older. "
quote wicpedia on mesopotamia:
The Fertile Crescent was inhabited with several distinct, flourishing cultures between the end of the last ice age (c. 10,000 BC) and the beginning of history. These include the Ubaid culture and the Uruk period. One of the oldest known Neolithic sites in Mesopotamia is Jarmo, settled around 7000 BC and broadly contemporary with Jericho and Ãatal Hüyük (Anatolia). It as well as other early Neolithic sites were in north Mesopotamia; later Sumerian settlements in southern Mesopotamia required complicated irrigation methods. mesopotamia is where our units of time come from
quote wicpedia on ancient egypt:
Ancient Egypt developed over at least three and a half millennia. It began with the incipient unification of Nile Valley polities around 3500 BC and is conventionally thought to have ended in 30 BC when the early Roman Empire conquered and absorbed Ptolemaic Egypt as a province.
egypt was older???
the trojan war (quote wicpedia again)
Since this war was considered among the ancient Greeks as either the last event of the mythical age or the first event of the historical age, several dates are given for the fall of Troy. They usually derive from geneologies of kings. Ephorus gives 1135 BC [3], Eratosthenes [4] 1184 BC/1183 BC,Plato 1193 BC [5], the Parian marble 1209 BC/1208 BC [6] ,Dicaearchus [7]1212 BC, Herodotus around 1250 BC [8] while Douris 1334 BC [9]. The glorious and rich city Homer describes was believed to be Troy VI by many 20th century authors, destroyed in 1275 BC, probably by earthquake. Its follower Troy VIIa , destroyed by fire at some point during the 1180s, was long considered a poorer city, but since the excavation campaign of 1988 it has risen to the most likely candidate.
