Nausea and vomiting can last a few weeks to the entire pregnancy; and morning sickness is misnamed - it can happen anytime. If it is too extreme, hopsitalization may be necessary as dehydration can add to other problems. Kidney stones are more likely in women with prolonged vomiting in pregnancy. These need to be monitored VERY closely, and are typically treated with IV fluids and antibiotics.
Maintaining proper nutrition is very difficult when you can't keep food down.
Best advice, follow the doctors advice, including IV therapy. If they feel a central line is needed, it could be because her state of dehydration could make it harder to find a good vein. IV's in the hand/arm should be changed every 72 hours, central lines, proplerly cared for can last for weeks.

I had 24 hour 7 day a week nausea with my pregnacy with my son, it is vitally important that you wife receives proper medical care during this time to reduce the risk of developmental problems with the baby, the bile can do more harm to the baby then the vomiting itself....Make sure she gets lots of nutrients for her and the baby speak to your doctor and get her treated the best way possible.

Yes, it is difficult to keep down food while pregnant. You should ask the doctor about drinking the Ensure type drinks and try to take the prenatal vitamins later in the day if that is easier. I know when I was pregnant and taking the vitamins they made me ill if I tried to take them first thing in the morning or on an empty stomach.

She is a rare case, with possible uremia, and will most likely require complete bed rest throughout the remainder of the pregnancy to avoid miscarriage.

Morning sickness can sometimes be so bad that you have to be hospitalised to receive the right amount of nutrients and fluids. It is unusual to have such bad sickness towards the end, but not unknown....
