Because people were dying from abusing it. Used under medical supervision LSD can be a good experience. Abused, and with no one to help you if you had a bad trip, it could (and frequently was) fatal.

The government experimented with it for years as a possible weapon. It was made illegal in the U.S. in 1955, but not really enforced until the 60s when people started having fun.
It was made illegal in the U.K. in 1966.

Just like any other drugs, people start using them because they have percived benefits but as time progresses and technology advances, it is found that the side effects of these drugs outweigh the benifits. And because the goverment seems to be hell-bent to save us from ourselves, they made it illegal.

Cause people learned that it was not good to drop acid and many were begining to have hallucinations. Then the people who didn't drop acid were jealous, and they made a law to outlaw it so no one else can drop.
Then all the people took it underground to get it.
