If you can boot up in safe mode go to ewido online scan and scan your computer.
To boot up in safe mode, turn off the computer, turn on the computer and alternately hit the F4 and F8 keys until you see the screen with the boot options. Select safe mode so that you can boot into windows.
Open Internet Explorer and navigate to www.ewido.com/
Run the online scan and follow the directions. If you computer is clean you will get a report.
I use both McAfee AV and Ewido all the time and I never have a problem. They also don't put a big drag on my system like Norton AV (Systemworks etc. by Symantec).
Ewido is about $24/yr, does not take over my system, runs in the background with daily updates, and I decided to fork it over when they saved me from just your situation.

Since the questions you have asked is similar to a lot that appear on answers, I have prepared this to aid you. Topics covered are: Anti virus, Anti spyware, Browsers, e-mail, Word processors, Database, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawings and Photo manipulations. All programmes described are free to use, some even for commercial use.
Antiviral.
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Antispyware
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD from: Download.com or similar, Tucows etc
Spywareblaster “ “ “ “
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
Office Applications
Open Office has an extremely good free to use and distribute product at http://www.openoffice.org
It contains programmes fully functional in Word-processing, Database, Spreadsheets, Drawing and Presentation. It looks and feels like Microsoft Office and can even make PDF's
Photo-manipulations
For ease of use and management of your photo files try Kodak easyshare software or Picasso.
For advanced and fully functional photographic manipulation gimp2 is very similar to Photoshop and is available from http://gimp.org
Browsers and E-mail programmes.
Can recommend Firefox for browsing and has many safety features installed and is self updating and for a general e-mail programme, Thunderbird is very good. Go to:
http://www.mozilla.com/products/
Fun and helpful programmes
Have a look at Calendar Magic, it has lots of Scientific, Geometry, Factor and Expression calculators as well as Global distances, Sun and Moon Data, a Pregnancy Calculator, Time Data and Alarm clocks as well as an extremely comprehensive range of Calendars in about 27 different formats from Afghanistan to Vietnamese, including Chinese and Hindu.
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.
Hope this information is of help to you and others.

This antivirus program I am giving is the best one out there. Its free and very easy to use.
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html
Definetly try this. When you scan your computer, make sure you close any open programs that may interfere with the scanner. It scans very deep into all files and folder.

Its possible your software is not picking it up
Try installing something else. download.com
although how do you know its still infected? It could be spyware, which is of course is completely different but just as annoying
go to download.com and get Lavasoft Ad-aware and spybot search and destroy.
Both are free and both are Ace!
Also update your definitions of your antivirus and update your machine, go to microsoft.com downloads if you're using XP

get your computer on safe mode . . . I restarted my computer and then pressed F8 . . . once in safe mode, run a MCAFEE (or another type) of virus scan . . . it should locate the downloader trojan and get rid of it . . . then re-start your PC once again and it will be gone . . . try mcafee.com and their message boards for further info . . . safe mode is the key!

options:
call technical support
backup your files and make a new clean installation of windows
remove antivirus system and then do a full scan with SpySweeper, and then install a new and different antivirus system (nod32, avg, etc), it may be helpful but not sure, it depends of what is happening with your pc
