Most DJ's are paid a low rate. Audio producers get paid slightly more for their talents. The real money is in sales though. While a DJ drives around in a beat up used car that is between 10 and 20 years old the salepeople drive around in brand new Lincoln Town Cars and great big SUV's. It sucks but that's the way it works. And yes, the money comes from advertising. As for the artists which are played, every radio station pays the record companies based on how many times a day the song is played. If the station has a webcast they have to pay twice.

There are MANY types of radio stations out there.
There are PUBLIC radio stations that are funded by "members" and donations raised within the community. Large endowments are created from these donations and the income off of these endowments help run the station. There is also a small amount of public funding available.
There are college stations that are run on special event fund-raisers but mostly from the school budgets.
There are internet and hobbyist radio stations that are funded by groups and individuals.......... some are non-profit in nature.
There is satellite radio and they are funded by subscriptions and some advertising dollars.
There are cable TV radio stations that are funded by the cable network subscribers.
You probably mean the "normal" commercial stations. A few times a year there are surveys that suggest how popular a station is and how many people listen to it at any given time of the day. Advertisers pay a rate depending on how many listeners the radio station has in that time-slot. The more people who are listening during morning drive-time....the higher the cost of advertising on that station at that time.

The majority of radio stations make their revenue through advertising. They might also get played by record companies and the like to play certain songs/musicians a lot...however, public radio stations are quickly losing money b/c they are losing listeners and thus advertisers...a lot of people are getting layed off by the top 3 radio conglomerates...

People pay for airtime, people pay to have their commercials advertised over the radio, thats where the station gets its income from.
