Excel is a spreadsheet program while Access is database.
spreadsheet programs are good for quick calculations means fast results. They are handy tools. When you need to store them in a well structured way they will not be much helpful.
So there comes Access/ Database to your help and you can store data in a way which is stored in well structured tabular manner.
It is easy to use database/Access as backend while using Frontend applications with it means you use other custom made program for user interface and use Access as backend as database.
