we were going to buy a dehumidifier & my wife says to put it in the basement because its more humid down there & her father always kept one in his basement. since we are on the main level of the house 95% of the time , i say we should keep it on the main level. maybe i should just break down & buy one for each level. we live just outside of chicago , & it can be very humid here in the summer.

A number of things come into play here. First is how much humidity in the air outside the home? The temperature differential between indoors and the ambient temp. outdoors. The type of basement (concrete block, poured concrete, or wood. If you have a moisture barrier on the outside of your basement walls ect. Also in some cases it even makes a difference what type of structure walls you have, type of insulation, how thick, and how thick the walls are.
I want to tell you that the basement is generally the best spot because the walls are cooler and tend to make condensation and moisture but I have seen a few homes where the upstairs didn't breathe quite adequate so they'd form moisture or in the windows which required a dehumidifier upstairs.
On the same token I've even seen a few that have a dehumidifier on both floors. Let the moisture accumulation be your guide if your uncertain!!

Most basements tend to be very humid to damp and need the moisture removed to protect the wood. Ideally you should put one in the basement for the house then for the main level just do as your comfort level dictates.

Put it in the basement. Water runs downhill and a lot of water infiltrates the basement wall.

You need some humidity so the air does not get too dry and cause dried sinuses, so don't put it on the main floor.
Basements are what get too damp, so put it there.

A wise investment, put it in the basement to start, try that for a while, then add one if you think you need it later. buy a good one, dont go cheep.
