the first guy could have broken the italians ankle. it was a TERRIBLE tackle. secondly yer man, pope, could have got sent off for his first yellow card, but regardless, having had one he should have had more sense than to jump in studs showing, making for another simple yellow card.
also mcbride was in an offside position and blocked the keeper's view for the disallowed goal, so was interfering with play. i just don't see what the complaints were about. for the first time the ref actually got decisions right in the world cup.

will agree that the ref was 'card-happy', but these ones were correct decisions. and remember, fifa have told the refs to clamp down on players diving in with studs showing at this tournament. probably the reason why there has been so many red cards so far.

em. just to emphasize the guys original question. The tackle on pirlo was the most shocking one seen at this world cup. and pope got a yellow card because you're not allowed tackles from behind. Plus America deserve all they get for:

1. For calling it ******* soccer
2. Dianna Ross
3. Deciding that penalties should be a stupid run from the half-way line
4. Trying to get goalkeepers to wear helmets at USA '94
5.The coach's name is BRUCE ARENA - thats not a ******* name, its big stadium where a bunch bruces duke it out to be named no.1 bruce

Pope's tackle was completly legal. He got the ball first. The first guy should have just gotten a yellow card not a red. I agree about McBride being in the keeper's line of vision but i didn't think he was offside. That ref has a history of when at international tournaments he would favor the team that was playing against the US and he did that again...

I think the U.S played excellently.... they were able to overcome having two players sent off and a goal disallowed... by the way there are quite a few true soccer fans in the U.S. No other team has been forced to cope with this much adversity.... the U.S. was the only team that had to play with 9 players.. Americans will find a reason their team tied.. even though they could have won... btw the ref was suspended for tampering with a game before... not that im suggesting that's what he did... people from around the world just aren't ready to see the U.S.A to perform well at a sport they aren't supposed to be good at... other people from other nations would say the same thing if their team tied in this style.... don't tell me you wouldn't do the same thing....

Offsides: Good call.. unfortunate, but good

First US Red: Terrible call.. yelow at best

Second US Yellow/Red: Close call, but when you are playing with one yellow, need to play smarter.

And yes, there are plenty of soccer/football fans in this country. Check out how many soccer matches are played each day from the 5-19 year old age groups and then look ate all other sports combined. I don't know about other areas of the country, but we have back to back to back games week days and weekends on multiple fields every day and still don't have enough fields. My son is on two teams and I've seen (in each league at different field locations) up to 15 games being played simultaneously.

mastroeni's tackle hit the ball first, which makes it legal. i do agree that pope should have had more sense in his yellow card play, and mcbride was offsides. most people are more angry about the amount of cards shown, and at the times that they came up. the ref was too harsh and was too fast in playing the various cards.

cuz Americans are whiners

They can't except the fact that their team sucks, therefore they're desperate to find any excuses possible for their unfortunalities. I completely agree with you, the ref's calls were fair and square. He had no choice but to give the cards in those situations.

I totally agree with all of ya~ Americans don't really care first of all, and ALWAYS find something to complain about. Ref's calls were fair and square.
I can't stand listening to those anchors or announcers, just whatever they're called. Complaining on and on and on~~ can't stand hearing them. I should just watch Univision or just other spanish channels. They make the game more exciting even though i don't understand them.....

i agree, while the refs were very card happy, all were deserved. and even though i am an Italian fan, i think that there was only one bad call. i think that de rossi deserved more than just a red for that elbow

I think that was the best refereeing job of the World Cup, thus far.
Difficult game, a number of difficult calls, but all of them were perfect.

Today's matches show that proper refereeing -- fewer red or yellow cards.
The referee did a horrible job. If yesterday's match had today's referee, it would have been different - maybe even a win for USA.
